What is Narayan Nagbali?
Narayan Nagbali is a three days ritual performed only at Trimbakeshwar and consists of two different rituals. It consists of two important rituals namely Narayan Bali and Nag Bali, performed on the first and second day respectively. The third day is reserved for a ritual called Punyaha Vachana.
Why is Narayan Nagbali is performed?
Narayan Nagbali ritual is done to fulfill the unsatisfied desires of the ancestor's souls which are attached to our world due to strong desires, suppressed within the soul even after the death. The soul trying to get rid of the problems, directly or indirectly trouble the family members. Hence we have to perform this ritual to give peace to the soul. Narayan Nagbali consists of two different rituals. Narayan bali is done to get rid of ancestral curse (Pitru Dosha) while Nagabali is done to get performed by killing snake, specially Naag (cobra) which is worshiped in India. With reference of Brahma Purana this ritual is performed only at Trimbakeshwar.
According to Sage Shaunak Rishi, when an individual collects wealth throughout his life and if gets intensely attached to his wealth then that individual after death in the form of serpent protects his wealth and does not allow anyone else to take its advantage. If serpent is killed in this or the previous birth then his curse is passed to its successors. Also, any person with a big wealth and no successor passes away, his attachment to his wealth makes his soul restless and in the form of a snake he remains with the wealth to safeguard it and does not allow anyone to grab it.
Ancient tradition is mentioned in Skanda Puran and Padma Puran that Narayan Nagbali is also performed to get rid of problems like-failures in all jobs, financial loss, Bhoot Pishacha Badha, family health problems, educational hurdles, matrionial delays, accidents, various curses and various other problems. Performing of the ritual, subsides all the negative effects and smoothens the flow of life stream. These rituals are performed with a desire of fulfillment of certain wishes. Hence they are known as Kamya Vidhi.1
Why Narayan Bali is performed?
Narayan Bali ritual is performed to fulfill the unsatisfied desires of the ancestral souls which are stuck in this world and trouble their progeny to get their wishes fulfilled. Narayan Bali consists of the same ritual as a Hindu funeral. A dummy body mostly made of wheat dough is used. Mantras are chanted to invoke such lost souls. The ritual makes them possess the dummy body which is later set alight. This causes the soul to liberate and transcend.
Why Nag Bali is performed?
Nag Bali ritual is same as a Narayan Bali, the only difference is that instead of a dummy human body a dummy body of snake which is made up of dough is used.
The meaning of Sankalpa that has to chant before starting Narayan Nagbali pooja –
"If in the present of past life I or any of our family members, has cheated and grabbed anyone's welath and if that person or any one from his family has become a restless soul which is giving us trouble, then O Lord, please offer that soul "Moksha", "Sadgati" (salvation).
